Before any student is referred to a METCO district, their parent or legal guardian must prove legal residency in the City of Boston. Any student whose primary residence is outside of Boston is not eligible for the METCO program. No student will be referred to a district without a photo ID of their parent or legal guardian and three proofs of residency.

You must bring three (3) copies of each document, including the application you get at the Information Session, to METCO Headquarters during a Drop-Off Day.

Legal Guardian Photo ID

  • Valid Massachusetts driver’s license
  • Valid Massachusetts ID card
  • Passport
  • Military, school or employment ID

Student Records

Health Records

  • Current physical and immunization record

Birth Certificate

School Records

  • Current grade’s progress report
  • Report cards from previous two years (if applicable)
  • IEP/504 (if applicable)

Proof of Boston Residency

One of the following proofs that you are authorized to live in a household:

  • Copy of a deed and record of most recent mortgage payment (dated within the past 60 days) or a property tax bill (dated with the last year)
  • Current lease (including BHA and HUD leases)
  • Section 8 agreement
  • Notarized landlord affidavit
  • Letter from shelter (if homeless)

Plus two of the following proofs that you occupy that household:

  • Utility bill or work order (gas, electric, or oil bill dated within the past 60 days; water/sewer bill not accepted)
  • Home telephone bill (landline only; cell phone bill not accepted)
  • Internet, satellite, or cable bill
  • Most Recent W-2
  • Car registration, vehicle excise tax bill, or car insurance bill
  • Letter from an approved government agency (Departments of Revenue [DOR], Children and Family Services [DCF], Transitional Assistance [DTA], Youth Services [DYS], Social Security, any communications on Commonwealth of Massachusetts letterhead)
